The Dramatist's Guild "The Dramatists Guild of America is the only professional association for playwrights, composers, and lyricists." Northwest Playwright's Guild "The Northwest Playwrights Guild is a non-profit organization established in 1982, to serve the needs of playwrights in the northwestern region of the United States and Canada." (AAR) The AAR is a "not-for-profit organization of independent literary and dramatic agents." Check out their Member Database where you can search for agents. A wish list item, hardly within the means of regular folks. How to Write a Damn Good Novel by James Frey Succinct, sparse, comprehensive, quick to read and to the point. Making a Good Script Great by Linda Seger I like this book for screenwriting help better than the traditional Field's, but then that's me. Random House Word Menu Great tool overall, though I use it most for poetry. There is a software version now, and although I haven't tried it, it's on my wishlist. Screenplay by Syd Field Yup. Long considered the "bible" although I think that there are better books on the market now. The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri Playwriting focus, but great info about the dramatic context of any story. The International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses "Little Mags and Presses" Small press ref. bible. Wait for new edition, though, for newest listings. I think it's due in October. Hm... The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Dictionary of dreams...only shorter The Writer's Journey by Chris Vogler Vogler breaks down Campbell's ideas of "Mythic Heroism" into chunks for the writer. Especially important tool for spec screenwriters. Story by Robert McKee I really like this tome for screenwriting. Brass tacks and lots of 'em. Research Links Hyperhistory Online A spatial genius designed this history chart with a interwoven overview of people and events throughout history. A great place to get started on your research, or fill in gaps. Journalist's Dream Resources Journalist Rich Gordon links you to the organizations that have the stats, data, and references. A wide variety of subjects. Renaissance: the Elizabethan World Great Elizabethan era sources and links. Check out the "Compendium of Common Knowledge." Great summary info. The World Factbook Nifty little resource stuffed full of all sorts of factual information about our world today, brought to you by your friends at the CIA. Human Rights Organization Medieval "Good Cookery" Site God may send a man good meate, but the devyll sende an evyll cooke... Okay, so I just like this site. Greek Mythology Link Great site, links to sources and subject explanations. Criminal Justice History Resources Dang! Don't let the name fool you, there is much more to this site than Criminal Justice. Loads of links. You will fall in and not climb out for hours, I promise. Absolutely worth the trip, however. Links to online libraries, documents, source materials, subject materials...international...you name it. Power Reporting Another gem for Journalists--and anyone else who is interested in the world at their fingertips. This comprehensive site is a research/reference tool. Stats, databases, publications, polls, lists...you name it. You can go anywhere. Online Texts and Source Materials Bartleby "Great Books Online": A terrific resource for online texts Complete Works of Shakespeare Shakespeare Online through MIT Duke Papyrus Archive "The Duke Papyrus Archive provides electronic access to texts from and images of nearly 1400 papyri from ancient Egypt." Groups info by subject: cultural, religious, slaves... Project Wittenburg Links to Lutheran texts online. Matrix "A scholarly resource for the study of women's religious communities from 400 to 1600CE" Historical Map Database A database so named for the extensive nature of this site. Fantastic resource although it runs frames which will be problematic for some browsers (mine). The link URL shows in the addressing line, though, so cut and paste if you have trouble. Internet Medieval Sourcebook Fantastic resource, loads of source materials, the trial of Joan of Arc being a favorite of mine. Can't say enough about it, essential for any medievalist. Internet Women's History Sourcebook Another Fabulous site for info and research - Women's history oriented The Perseus Digital Library Five Star Online Text library, this one focusing on the Greco-Roman classics, including over 15,000 images. Wow. Other historical image and text collections also housed on this site. Sunsite Text Collection Unbelievably fabulous resource, loads of docs and images, source material from Middleages to present. Ancient Scripts Online Great place to get your fill of logograms, and for those who enjoy poking around linguistics in general. Site run by Laurence K. Lo. Mags and Publications Writer's Weekly E-zine "The highest-circulation freelance writing e-zine in the world." Good info, nice format. Web del Sol This site claims to be the "Locus of Literary Art" and they aren't kidding. You'll find it all here, I especially like the links to Lit Mags and Poetry Journals. Drew's Script-O-Rama Looking for scripts to read? Get an idea of how to write scripts by reading real industry scripts. Many are posted here in different stages of revision, so you can see the revision process at work. Great site. Thanks Drew! Moondance Film Festival There are many film festivals out there, but I admit to being partial to this one. This site also sports a treasure trove of links to film, screenwriting, television, playwriting, radio, kids & film, organizations and even puppetry. Festival is in May. 4Filmmakers "4Filmmakers is a comprehensive database consisting of film projects in development throughout the entertainment industry" Moviebytes Links to screenwriting and film contests, deadlines, and industry news. Hollywood Reporter Core entertainment industry publication. Variety The other of the Hollywood "trades," and an essential Hollywood publication.
